The City of 100 Towers: A Walk Through Medieval Mantua (62 characters)

Before the lakes and before the Gonzagas, Mantua was a forest of towers: medieval travelers recognized it from afar by its rugged profile, which earned it the reputation of the "city of a hundred towers." Many have fallen, others hide among the rooftops: on this walk, we will learn to see them again.
We begin at Campo Canoa, where the ancient village of San Giorgio once stood: from here, the view of the city reflected in the lake is the most beautiful of all (a photo is a must!). After crossing the San Giorgio Bridge, we enter the city from Piazza Arche and encounter the Sant'Alò Tower, an ancient bastion of the first circle of walls. We continue toward the Zuccaro Tower and the mysterious Gabbia Tower, the tallest in the city, whose ominous name hides a history few truly know.
The route finally leads us into the historic center, the second circle of walls, to reveal the secrets of the Clock Tower, with its extraordinary astrological dial, and the Salaro Tower, linked to the salt trade.
