From Tarraco to Tarragona: Anatomy of a Superimposed City

Did you know that many of the streets you walk on today in Tarragona still bear the mark of ancient Tarraco?

In this free tour, we will travel through the different layers of the city to discover how the great Roman urban project transformed over the centuries and how each society reused and adapted the spaces according to their needs.

We will start at the Amphitheater and ascend to the Tower of the Praetorium, the gateway to the upper part of Tarragona. From there, we will understand the organization of the three great terraces of Tarraco and the role they played in the construction of the imperial city.

We will follow the perimeter of the Provincial Forum to the current Plaça del Fòrum, observing how its ancient structures were absorbed by the medieval city.

We will continue to the Cathedral, built on the ancient worship site of Tarraco, and from there descend towards the walls, where we will see how the city transformed over its own structures.

We will reach the Plaça de la Font, located over the ancient Roman Circus, to understand how a gigantic space intended for entertainment ended up integrated into the modern city.

Finally, we will travel to the Mediterranean Balcony, where we will conclude our journey by bidding farewell to the Tarragona of the 19th and 20th centuries.

We will not only visit monuments: we will learn to read Tarragona, understanding how urban planning, society, and daily life have influenced each other for over 2,000 years.
