Dertosah Judaica (Jewish Quarter of Tortosa)

The tour lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes
Available in Catalan, English and Spanish

Description

Discover Tortosa’s Jewish heritage on a journey through the streets, hidden corners and historic spaces of the old Jewish Quarter. Dertusah Judaica brings to life the story of one of the most important Jewish communities — or aljamas — in the Crown of Aragon, a community that played a significant role in the city’s economic, cultural and urban development for centuries.

Along the way, we will explore how the Jewish Quarter evolved, its gateways, walls, communal spaces and former places of worship. A little imagination is required, as much of Tortosa’s Jewish past is still waiting to be uncovered by archaeology.

We will also meet remarkable figures such as Menahem ben Saruq and talk about coexistence, prosperity, persecution and diaspora, as well as the Sephardic memory that still survives in Tortosa through historical documents, tombstones, archaeological remains and local traditions.

This tour offers the chance to discover and essential yet often overlooked chapter in Tortosa’s medieval history.

In Tortosa the most exciting thing is the history of its city and its territory of influence since the time of the Iberians. I am passionate about history, especially my territory and ancient times, especially the Middle Ages and the Order of the Temple. My special interest is Romanesque and Gothic architecture, where we can explore sacred geometries and construction. It is the differentiating attraction of the routes that I carry out, finding and showing the mystery, its special location, the antiquity of the place, stories and legends... Feeling and making people feel that the stones also speak.
