Rome hides a whole world beneath its streets, and this guided tour takes you straight into it. Over one well-paced day, you descend into eerie bone chapels and early Christian catacombs while round-trip transport handles the tricky logistics for you. All you have to do is follow your expert guide and soak up the stories.
Your day begins at the Capuchin Crypts, tucked beneath the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione. With an audio guide in hand, explore chapels lined with the bones of generations of Capuchin friars and learn how these haunting displays reflect a long monastic tradition. (The Capuchin Crypts are not included on the standard group catacombs option.)
From there, settle into a private van and ride toward the catacombs on the edge of the city. Along the way, tune in as your guide points out the ancient Appian Way, the towering Aurelian Walls, and the grassy sweep of the Circus Maximus, weaving in tales of Spartacus and the defenses that once ringed Rome. The drive itself is part of the experience, tracing routes that armies and pilgrims once traveled.
Then you head underground into one of Rome's most storied catacombs, where narrow corridors open onto frescoed chambers and burial niches once reserved for martyrs and popes. Your guide unpacks the early Christian world as you trace tunnels carved from soft volcanic rock, uncovering the symbols the faithful left behind.
Pick the version of the day that fits you best: join a standard daytime group, choose a smaller after-hours visit when the sites are quiet, or go fully private with hotel pickup and added stops at Santa Maria in Cosmedin and the Mouth of Truth. Every option pairs an expert guide with round-trip transport, so you enjoy the same easy access however you choose to explore.
