Discover the hidden wine heritage of Venice, where viticulture has existed for over 2,500 years. Until the year 1100, a vineyard even stood in St. Mark’s Square, a reminder of how deeply agriculture was woven into lagoon life. In a city where 92% of the surface is water, Venice’s islands were historically cultivated for self-sufficiency — which is why Venetian squares are called campi (“fields”).
Venissa was founded in 2002 on the island of Torcello, opposite the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the oldest church in Venice. Here, Gianluca Bisol rediscovered a small vineyard and began extensive historical and agronomic research that led to the revival of Dorona di Venezia, an indigenous grape variety uniquely adapted to the lagoon’s saline environment.
Today, within the walled vineyard of Mazzorbo, Dorona gives life to Venissa Bianco, a truly unique wine produced in extremely limited quantities and considered the purest expression of Native Venice.
An even rarer Venissa Rosso is produced on the remote island of Santa Cristina, where heroic viticulture and a fragile ecosystem coexist in perfect balance.
This experience offers a rare opportunity to explore Venice through its landscapes, history, and wines — a journey into the city’s most authentic and lesser-known tradition.
There is only one hectare of this vineyard variety in the world, and only 3500 bottles are produced each year: you will have the opportunity to taste it.
