Directly behind the Pitti Palace lie the enchanting Boboli Gardens, a masterpiece of landscape design. Originally developed by the Medici family, the gardens established the quintessential Italian garden style that would inspire many European royal courts. They represent the first example of royal gardens in Italy, symbolizing the power and the refined lifestyle of a noble family. A real trip back in time! This vast expanse of greenery, arranged in a formal layout, serves as an open-air museum, showcasing an impressive collection of ancient and Renaissance statues. The gardens are enriched by grottos, including the renowned grotto by Bernardo Buontalenti, and grand fountains like the Fountain of Neptune and the Fountain of the Ocean.
Later, the Habsburg-Lorraine and Savoy dynasties expanded the gardens, extending their boundaries along the ancient city walls to Porta Romana. Among its highlights is the Kaffeehaus, an 18th-century Rococo pavilion that offers a rare glimpse of this architectural style in Tuscany, as well as the Lemon House, designed by Zanobi del Rosso in the late 1770s.
