If you're making your own way to Versailles, this tour picks up right at the palace entrance and takes care of everything from there. It's ideal for travelers who prefer flexibility and are confident in getting to the palace independently.
You'll meet in front of the bronze statue on the palace forecourt, a hard-to-miss landmark just before the main gates. Once the group is together, your guide gives you a quick overview of the plan, and then you're off, skipping the queues that tend to snake across the courtyard and heading straight inside.
The first rooms you'll move through are the Grand Apartments of the King, where the scale of the palace really starts to sink in. Painted ceilings, gilded walls, and rooms designed purely to impress tell you everything you need to know about how Louis XIV saw himself and his court. Your guide connects the dots between the art, the architecture, and the politics behind it all.
From there, you step into the Queen's suite, and the tone shifts slightly. These chambers are a little more personal, designed for both the formality of court life and quieter private moments. Your guide traces how queens like Marie Antoinette shaped these rooms, which adds a more human layer to everything you've seen up to this point.
Then comes the Hall of Mirrors, and it genuinely earns the hype. Seventeen arched windows throw light across 357 mirrors and rows of chandeliers in a way that photos don't quite capture. Your guide walks you through the history of the room, from the Sun King's intentions to the Treaty of Versailles, signed here in 1919.
Once the guided portion wraps up at the upper terrace, the gardens are your to explore independtly. André Le Nôtre's formal design stretches out in front of you, with parterres, fountains, and tree-lined paths in every direction. There's no rush, no set end time, just open space to explore however long you like.
