The day begins in Tokyo’s lively Ginza district, where you’ll board a comfortable, air-conditioned coach and leave the city behind. As the urban landscape gradually gives way to forested hills and mountain roads, you’ll journey towards Nikko, one of Japan’s most celebrated destinations for its combination of historic temples, sacred sites, and spectacular natural scenery.
Your first stop is the iconic Shinkyo Bridge, one of Nikko’s most recognizable landmarks. Spanning the clear waters of the Daiya River, this striking vermilion bridge marks the traditional entrance to Nikko’s sacred area. Take some time to admire the bridge and its beautiful surroundings, where the river, forest, and mountains create a peaceful introduction to the region.
Next, discover Toshogu Shrine, the most famous of Nikko’s historic shrines and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Set among towering cedar trees, the shrine complex is known for its elaborate carvings, colorful decorations, and impressive gates and buildings. Look out for some of its best-known details, including the famous Three Wise Monkeys, whose carvings represent the traditional proverb “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil,” as well as the richly decorated Yomeimon Gate.
Travelers who select the ticket-inclusive option can enter the Toshogu Shrine complex and explore its decorated buildings and sacred grounds. If you choose the option without entrance tickets, you’ll have free time to explore the surrounding area at your own pace.
After visiting Nikko’s historic heart, continue into the surrounding mountain area to experience a different side of the region. The journey takes you through forests and mountain landscapes, with opportunities to admire the scenery and enjoy the changing atmosphere of Nikko throughout the seasons. Depending on the time of year, the landscape can feature fresh greenery, vibrant autumn colors, or a peaceful winter setting.
