Escape Nara’s busiest sightseeing routes and discover a quieter, more beautiful side of the ancient capital on a private walk through Isuien Garden, peaceful Ukimido, cultural Takabatake, and the traditional merchant streets of Naramachi.
Begin near Kintetsu Nara Station and walk through the historic Kofukuji area before leaving the main sightseeing route behind.
Continue to Isuien, one of Nara’s most beautiful traditional landscape gardens.
Walk through a carefully designed world of ponds, stepping stones, teahouses, trees, and borrowed scenery while your guide introduces the ideas behind Japanese garden design. Take time to slow down and enjoy views that change as you move through the garden.
After Isuien, continue through quieter paths around Yoshikien and the edge of the Todaiji area. Walk among greenery, traditional walls, stone paths, and peaceful corners away from the busiest temple routes.
Continue through Nara Park toward Ukimido, an elegant wooden pavilion that appears to float above Sagiike Pond.
Pause beside the water and enjoy one of Nara’s most peaceful landscapes, where the pavilion, pond, trees, and reflections create a completely different atmosphere from the busier deer and temple areas.
From Ukimido, continue into Takabatake, a quiet residential neighborhood known for its cultural and literary character.
Walk through peaceful lanes around the former residence of writer Naoya Shiga, passing traditional homes, gardens, old walls, and smaller temples while discovering a more local side of Nara.
Finally, enter Naramachi, Nara’s historic merchant district.
Explore narrow streets lined with traditional machiya townhouses, local craft shops, cafés, sweets stores, and historic details that preserve the atmosphere of old Nara.
The contrast is the heart of the experience: a refined Japanese garden, peaceful waterside scenery, quiet cultural neighborhoods, and the traditional streets of Naramachi—all beyond Nara’s busiest sightseeing route.
Because this is a private tour, the pace can be adjusted naturally. Spend more time enjoying the garden, walking quiet streets, browsing local shops, taking photos, or asking questions about Nara’s culture.
The tour finishes in Naramachi, where you can continue independently for cafés, traditional sweets, local crafts, shopping, or restaurants.
Isuien Garden admission, food, drinks, shopping, and admission to other paid facilities are not included unless otherwise stated.
