Begin your journey at Casa dos Bicos, a 16th-century Renaissance palace built by the son of the man who conquered Goa for Portugal. Learn how it was later turned into a cod fish warehouse, a contrast between grandeur and humor that defines Lisbon.
Along the way, visit 14 carefully chosen stops, including places that appear in no guidebook or Instagram list. Stand in front of the oldest inhabited house in Lisbon, a medieval Gothic building from the 14th century that survived the great earthquake of 1755 while 85% of the city was destroyed around it.
Walk through a tunnel where the entire history of Lisbon, from the Phoenicians to the present day, is told in comic-strip murals on the walls. See a street mural sculpted directly into the wall by Alexandre Farto, known as Vhils, one of Portugal's most internationally recognized street artists. The face of Amália Rodrigues, the Queen of Fado, emerges from the stone. When it rains, the cobblestones darken and the face appears to cry.
Visit three viewpoints, including Portas do Sol, the emotional peak of the tour. Close your eyes before reaching the railing and open them to a 180-degree view over the red rooftops of Alfama and the Tagus River.
Touch an 1800-year-old Roman wall that most tourists walk past without knowing what it is. End the tour with the story of Fado, the music born in these alleys in the 19th century, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011, and the story of saudade, the Portuguese word that has no translation in any other language in the world.
