About the Arc de Triomphe
Legend has it that Napoleon Bonaparte, potentially feeling self-conscious about his height, decided to create a monument that would resonate with others who might share similar sentiments. In 1805, following a French victory in the Battle of Austerlitz, he commissioned the creation of a grand monument to commemorate this triumph, aiming to evoke a sense of humility in those who beheld its impressive architecture. Thus, the vision for the Arc de Triomphe began, though it's notable that Napoleon did not witness its completion.
Positioned at the end of the famed Champs-Élysées, the Arc de Triomphe showcases the names of Napoleon's significant victories carved into its structure. Beneath these inscriptions lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where an eternal flame burns in honor of those who perished and remain unidentified during the two World Wars.
