Depart from central Osaka early morning and head south to Wakayama Prefecture, the home of millennia-old pilgrimage culture. First, arrive at Kumano Hongu Taisha, the head shrine of Kumano Sanzan, marked by the Great Torii of Oyunohara — Japan’s tallest wooden torii gate. Immerse yourself in peaceful shrine grounds rooted in Heian-period faith, with optional access to the treasure hall for extra insight into local spiritual history.
Next, travel toward the coast to Kumano Nachi Taisha, famous as a shrine for romantic match-making and family harmony. Adjacent stands Seiganto-ji Temple, the first stop of Japan’s Saigoku 33 Kannon pilgrimage with over 1,300 years of history. Lunch is self-arranged at local restaurants near the shrines, giving you freedom to pick your preferred local Wakayama cuisine.
