The hydrofoil does the fast part. Naples moves away, Ischia gets closer, and shortly after you have a scooter below you. So far, the island seemed to show its best side from the sea. Crossing it seriously calls the theory into question.
Ischia from the inside is much less orderly. There are shops that seem to have remained open since another era, churches that appear between two houses, new roads and others that evidently have no intention of becoming so. Then you turn a corner and the scale of things suddenly changes.
The houses end. In front of you, the sea, the mountain and Sant'Angelo appear in the distance. At the next bend, the panorama shifts to the other side, and you follow it behind it with your head. There are benches along the way. They stay there all day watching. They've been very lucky.
At that point, knowing how far it is to Maronti becomes quite irrelevant. Stopping, on the other hand, is almost inevitable. The road begins to descend. A parking lot, a tobacco shop, a few stores, a garden: all very close and not necessarily in the right order. At the bottom of the steps: the Marontis.
At Bagno Ida, there's very little between the entrance and the sea. Large straw umbrellas, orange sunbeds, light wood, a few yellow details, and that little blue fish that reappears almost everywhere. Everything is simple, but nothing seems to be left to chance. Then the beach ends and the blue begins. On the right, Sant'Angelo completes the panorama. In front, however, the sea continues without bothering to put a full stop.
Swimming on an island, from the beach, is a slightly different matter. You enter the water from the mainland, but in front of you there is nothing left to remind you of it. At Maronti, the sea is cool, open, that shade of blue that makes the sun lounger a project that is constantly postponed.
The light lunch arrives when you finally manage to stay out of the water: fried squid, squid, parmigiana, tomato and basil bruschetta, fresh fruit, and wine. Even lunch here seems to have understood that it doesn't have to compete with the sea
