No ancient text mentions this building, and its true purpose is still debated. The leading theory is that it served as a secret temple for followers of Neo-Pythagoreanism, a mystical philosophy centred on the soul's journey and reincarnation. Others believe it was a private funerary monument, possibly built by the wealthy Stateliest family. Whatever its purpose, the basilica's builders spared no expense: its three-aisled hall and barrel vaults are covered in over a hundred delicate white stucco reliefs depicting myths of death, transformation, and the afterlife — Orpheus, Ganymede, Sappho, and more.
