Two of Rome's most famous places are only a short walk apart, but the streets between them tell a much bigger story. Begin at the Pantheon with your local guide. Rather than simply listing dates and facts, your guide explains how this extraordinary building changed from an ancient Roman monument into the church and landmark you see today. Look up at the Oculus and enormous dome, hear how Roman engineers approached the challenge of covering such a large interior space, and learn why the Pantheon survived while so many other ancient buildings disappeared. Then leave the Pantheon behind and continue on foot through the historic center. The walk takes you through small streets and piazzas that are easy to pass without noticing. Along the way, your guide connects ancient Rome with the Renaissance and Baroque city that developed around it. Pause at Piazza della Minerva, where an ancient Egyptian obelisk stands above Bernini's famous elephant sculpture. Continue toward Piazza Navona and learn how one of Rome's most spectacular squares began with a very different purpose. Your guide explains the connection between the square and the ancient Stadium of Domitian, then brings the story forward to the Baroque period and the famous rivalry between Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini. Finish at the Fountain of the Four Rivers, where your guide explains the details hidden in Bernini's masterpiece and the stories surrounding its creation. By the end of the tour, you will have seen more than two famous Roman landmarks. You will understand how different periods of Rome were built on top of one another and how the city you see today grew from its ancient foundations.
