What happens when an earthquake changes the shape of a city?
Discover two versions of Lisbon on this private 2-hour walk: the old city that grew through centuries of winding streets and hillside neighborhoods, and the monumental Lisbon that emerged after the devastating earthquake of 1755.
Begin around Alfama, one of the best places to experience Lisbon's older urban character. At Miradouro de Santa Luzia, look across terracotta rooftops toward the Tagus before entering the narrow streets of the historic quarter.
Continue toward the fortress-like Sé de Lisboa. Around the cathedral, your guide introduces the Lisbon that existed long before the broad squares and ordered streets of the lower city.
Then the story changes.
On November 1, 1755, a powerful earthquake struck Lisbon, followed by fires and a tsunami. Much of the city center was destroyed, forcing Lisbon not simply to repair itself, but to rethink how a city could be built.
Walk toward Praça do Comércio and step into the result.
Its monumental arcades, open proportions, and relationship with the Tagus contrast dramatically with the streets explored earlier. Your guide connects the square with the reconstruction that transformed Lisbon and created a new urban center.
Continue toward the ruins of the Convento do Carmo. Its roofless Gothic arches remain one of the most striking reminders of the destruction of 1755 and create another connection between the city before the disaster and the Lisbon that followed.
Along the way, pause for a tasting of a traditional local specialty and hear about everyday Lisbon beyond its monuments.
Finish around Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, where the city opens below you. From here, look back across the hills, historic neighborhoods, reconstructed downtown, and castle slopes you've been discussing along the way.
Because this is a private experience, there is time for questions and conversation, with the pace adapted to your group. Your guide will also share personal recommendations for places to eat, drink, and continue exploring afterwards.
By the end of the walk, Lisbon's different streets and neighborhoods should make more sense: not simply as a collection of famous sights, but as evidence of a city divided by one extraordinary moment into a before and an after.
