Begin at Sheridan Square and explore Greenwich Village, a neighborhood at the heart of New York City’s cultural and social change. This approximately two-hour walking tour focuses on civil rights, arts and entertainment, and LGBTQ+ history while tracing the Village’s 19th-century development.
Walk along West 4th Street and hear stories of Bob Dylan, Taylor Swift, and the Village’s music scene. Continue along Bleecker Street, across Sixth Avenue, and toward MacDougal Street, where cafés, clubs, poets, and performers shaped the neighborhood in the 1950s and 1960s. Hear about Cafe Wha?, Gerde’s Folk City, Caffe Dante, and the folk music movement.
At Washington Square Park, discover connections to early African American New Yorkers and the area’s transformation from a potter’s field to a military parade ground and public park. Learn about Washington Square Arch and Jane Jacobs’ fight against Robert Moses’ plans to bring automobile traffic through the park.
Continue along Fifth Avenue and explore the lives of photographer André Kertész, former mayor Ed Koch, Congresswoman Bella Abzug, playwright and activist Larry Kramer, and marriage-equality pioneer Edie Windsor. Discover Emma Lazarus’ former home and how her poetry became linked to the Statue of Liberty and American immigration. Hear about political radicalism and the townhouse associated with the 1970 Weather Underground explosion.
Along Waverly Place and West 10th Street, explore the Village’s LGBTQ+ history through stories of Julius’ Bar, the Stonewall area, the struggle for equal rights, and AIDS activism. A visit to the LGBTQ+ Visitor Center may be included, subject to operating hours and itinerary timing.
Stroll through Commerce, Bedford, and Barrow Streets. Hear about Cherry Lane Theatre, the Village’s experimental theater tradition, and playwrights including Eugene O’Neill and Edward Albee.
See Grove Court and discover how farms, estates, churches, epidemics, and property lines shaped the neighborhood’s distinctive streets. Learn how the 1811 Commissioners’ Plan transformed Manhattan while parts of the Village retained an older street pattern. Passing St. Luke in the Fields, hear how yellow fever epidemics and New Yorkers’ northward movement contributed to the area’s early development.
Throughout the tour, discover stories of the artists, musicians, writers, actors, and activists who helped define Greenwich Village. The experience concludes near Hudson and Christopher Streets.
