Visit one of Europe’s oldest synagogues in Barcelona’s medieval Jewish quarter, the Call. Guided tours reveal its history and Jewish culture, with a small museum on site.
In 1987, the medievalist Jaume Riera y Sans took the initial steps that made it possible to foresee the exact situation of what was the Sinagoga Mayor of Barcelona until 1391.
The oldest Call site -the Call Mayor- was located between the streets of l’Arc de Sant Ramon, Call, Bisbe and Sant Sever. In the middle of the 13th century, the geographic space destined for the community must have been expanded, and it prospered in the surroundings of what is today the Church of Sant Jaume -el Call Menor-.
We are, therefore, before a building whose foundations date back to Roman times that has been restored to be able to be visited.
