Embark on a journey to unveil the secrets of Rome with our catacombs tour along the Appian Way. Dive deep into the city's captivating history, revealing intriguing insights about its Roman and Catholic heritage!
Options for the Tour
Upon making a reservation, you'll have the choice between two distinct experiences, both offering an English-speaking guide, transportation, and entrance fees. Below are the specifics of each option:
Exploration of the Catacombs on the Appian Way
At the scheduled time, we will gather at the Basilica of Saints Cosme and Damian to initiate our adventure. Are you prepared to discover what lies beneath the Eternal City? Let’s begin!
We will board our vehicle and travel towards the Christian Catacombs of Callixtus located on the historic Appian Way, which dates back to the Roman era.
Accompanied by our guide, we will navigate through this network of tunnels hewn from volcanic tuff. Here, we will encounter burial sites of early Christians, allowing us to share remarkable tales hidden within these ancient walls. Have you ever toured a catacomb?
This tour will conclude approximately 1.5 to 2 hours later. We look forward to seeing you!
Catacombs on the Appian Way + Mamertine Prison
For those seeking a deeper experience, this option includes two of the most significant landmarks from Ancient Rome. Starting from the Basilica of Saints Cosme and Damian, our first stop will be the Mamertine Prison, situated near the Roman Forum.
Constructed in the 7th century, this prison was historically utilized by Romans for detaining prominent figures, including Saint Peter and Saint Paul, prior to their execution by order of Nero.
Next, we will make our way to the Christian catacombs along the ancient Appian Way. Here, our exploration of the underground passages will reveal the resting places of early Christians. Throughout this segment, insights into burial customs from that era and the enigmas contained within will be shared.
This tour will wrap up around 2.5 to 3 hours later
