From Edinburgh: Alnwick Castle and Scottish Borders Tour

As you leave Edinburgh and journey south into the Scottish Borders, you enter a landscape of rolling hills, quiet valleys and a rich, layered history. This scenic region is a patchwork of farmland, abbeys and traditional towns, where centuries of stories still shape the character of the land. Your first stop is the elegant town of Kelso. Here, you can explore what is believed to be Scotland’s largest market square, surrounded by handsome Georgian buildings. The highlight of your day is a visit to Alnwick Castle, one of the most iconic castles in the UK. This vast and impressive fortress has stood for nearly 1,000 years, originally built to secure Norman control over northern England. Today, it blends history with modern fame, having featured as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films.

You have the option to pre-book your entry to Alnwick Castle (highly recommended) to guarantee access and to enhance your magical experience. Inside, you can explore grand state rooms, exhibitions and beautifully maintained grounds that bring the castle’s long history vividly to life. Alternatively, you can spend time in the charming town itself, including a visit to one of Britain’s largest and most renowned second-hand bookshops.

Leaving Alnwick, you travel along the spectacular Northumberland Coast, where rugged cliffs, sandy beaches and dramatic sea views provide perfect photo opportunities along the way.

As the day draws to a close, you return north into Scotland, passing once more through the peaceful landscapes of the Borders before reaching East Lothian. Here, you stop in the coastal town of Dunbar, birthplace of the famous naturalist John Muir. Enjoy a short stroll and take in the fresh sea air before continuing your journey back to Edinburgh.
