Hi! I am Mohammed, a long-time veteran of the hospitality industry, and it is my passion for traveling that has led me to become a Moroccan culture ambassador in Fez. Exploring the Old Medina on your own is a little bit risky due to the numerous look-alike alleys. So through this experience, I would like to introduce to you the Old Medina of Fes and its Ramparts by telling you all about the Historical background and local cultural anecdotes. Tour description
Through the main entrance of the Old Medina, we will walk to “Talaa Sghira” to see the traditional food markets . Then we will proceed to visit the following sites:
- Ennejarine Square; to see the oldest fountain in the Medina, as well as the “Ennejjarine” museum, where you will get to discover plenty of artifacts and see how CaravanSerais were centuries ago. We’ll also have a walk through Ennejjarine streets to see traditional wood artisans making their art.
- Stop by at a Moroccan holy section: ”Moulay Idriss 2 tomb”
- Walk through “Essebaghin ” square where they redye the wool, and catch a sight of the river that separates the old Medina on 2 sections: The Andalusian Section, and The Quaraouin section.
- Stop by at El Quaraouin Mosque
- Visit a Carpet cooperative, and observe moroccan women making rugs the traditional way.
- Stop by at the oldest tanneries in Fez and all Africa.
- Visit a berber pharmacy and observe the local making of Argan oil.
Your guided tour will contain a mix of informative and enjoyable discovery of historical sites and artifacts.

The tour was fine. We walked a lot in this huge Medina but didn't really get the chance to know what we were looking at. We had tea et sweets at Mohammed's mother but at the end when we gave him the money, we really felt it was not enough and I hate this feeling... we had a private tour but we didn't ask for it and because we are travellers and not tourists we don't have a budget for a private tour. I felt uncomfortable

Che dire Mohammed si e' rilevata un ottima guida, gentile e garbata, ma sarebbe stato piu' gradito un giro meno commerciale, nelle cooperative abbiamo pagato ulteriormente per visitarle e siamo stati pressati molto x acquistare.

Mohammed é stato molto gentile nel venirci a prendere direttamente nel Riad dove risiedevamo.
Tuttavia, questo ci ha costretti a prendere un taxi visto che non alloggiavamo nella Medina (e di cui abbiamo approfittato per andare con Mohammed a vedere la cittá dall'alto) per poi arrivare alla Medina.
Il taxi era a nostre spese e ci é costato 100 Dirham: secondo Mohammed era piú economico dei taxi turistici che costano 300; secondo me, l'informazione non é stata del tutto onesta, visto che il giorno dopo abbiamo preso un altro taxi a Fez che per 20 minuti di corsa (é stata piú o meno la stessa durata del taxi che avevamo preso il giorno prima) ci ha fatto pagare 40 Dirham in totale (20 a testa).
C'è da aggiungere inoltre che Mohammed é una persona molto cordiale e gentile, parla bene italiano e ci ha accompagnati a vedere la scuola coranica, abbiamo fatto il giro per le strade della medina, visto gli artigiani e visitato un hammam.
Tuttavia, dopo circa un'ora dall'inizio del giro, il tour si é concentrato nella visita delle cooperative di tappeti, pelli, tele e prodotti farmacologici, dove i commercianti ci pressionavano perché comprassimo qualcosa; il giro é interessante visto che puoi vedere come lavorano la tela, le pelli, ecc ecc. peró i commercianti sono troppo insistenti, e da quel momento in poi si é creato nel gruppo una sorta di nervosismo generale, visto che entravamo e uscivamo da una cooperativa all'altra con l'intento quasi obbligo di farci comprare qualcosa.
Nel caso nostro avevamo prenotato un free tour di 3 ore, e ne abbiamo spese quasi 2 tra una cooperativa e l'altra. A mia opinione, dovrebbe essere il tour piú misto o magari alternare un giro culturale con una cooperativa, per evitare che risulti pesante.
Infine, avendo prenotato un Free Tour dove l'offerta é libera, abbiamo pagato a Mohammed ció che ritenevamo giusto (paragonando il tour di Fez a quello fatto in precedenza a Marrakech e di cui eravamo pienamente soddisfatti), Mohammed un poco innervosito ci ha chiesto di piú perché quelli erano i suoi prezzi (piú di quanto avessimo pagato per il tour di Marrakech di piú ore e molto piú esaustivo).
A mio parere, il tour valeva molto meno di quanto ci é stato chiesto di pagare, pertanto io credo che si dovrebbe:
- o migliorare la qualitá e durata del tour ricevendo piú informazioni culturali che commerciali,
- o lasciare il cliente libero di pagare l'offerta che lui ritiene consona, visto e considerato il fatto che non a caso avevamo prenotato un "Free Tour".

Meine Freundin und ich hatten die free walking Tour durch die Medina von Fes gebucht. Hassan holte uns von unserer Riad ab. Im Auto sagte er uns dann auf einmal, dass er 300 MAD für die Tour will. Wir haben ihm dann gesagt, dass wir eine free walking Tour gebucht haben und diese auf tips basiert. Daraufhin wurde er relativ wütend und wir haben uns sehr eingeschüchtert gefühlt und ihm das Geld gegeben. Nachdem er uns eine Sehenswürdigkeit zeigte, verschwand er und kam nach 10 Minuten mit zwei weiteren Teilnehmern. Diese haben die Tour über getyourguide für insgesamt 40€ gebucht. Die Tour war okay, aber hassan hat uns in diese typischen Läden reingebracht, in denen sie wollen, dass man etwas kauft. Hassan hat ebenfalls harten Alkohol während der Tour getrunken, was natürlich ein krasses No-Go ist. Am Ende wollte er uns noch in ein Restaurant schleppen, da sind wir dann aber einfach gegangen. Er hat die anderen noch aufgehalten, weil er von ihnen Trinkgeld wollte, weil diese die Tour ja über getyourguide gebucht haben. Leider wird hier nicht das eingehalten was eine free walking Tour verspricht, daher kann ich diese Tour, zumindest mit hassan, definitiv nicht weiter empfehlen.
