Free Walking Tour of Port of Spain
Tour description
Welcome to Port of Spain, capital of Trinidad and Tobago. We speak English. The Brits kicked Spain out in 1797, but kept the name. They built the town up in the century and a half before independence in 1962 with French, Indian, African, Spanish and Arab influences. The indigenous were wiped out in 1600, so not much of them. Come see the home of Carnival without the colours
Allow me to add some context to the buildings starting from the Waterfront Complex by the Hyatt Hotel and the Government Plaza. We cross Wrightson Road to Brian Lara Promenade along Independence Square to CiprianiStatue, the Lighthouse and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
We walk up Charlotte to the Gothic Rosary basilica at the corner of Park, passing Queen, Prince and Duke Streets. We return to Frederick and Duke where we pass outside City Hall, the old Library, Red House, Hall of Justice. Visitors can tour the Art Gallery inside the Red House.
The tour concludes with some lunch recommendations for classic Trini food eaten by the locals and a guide to seeing the culture hubs on the outskirts of Port of Spain where author VS Naipaul and singer Nicki Minaj were born.
