Free Tour of Kamakura with a Local: Samurai History & Culture

  • 2 hours
  • English

Description

Discover Kamakura with a local guide who actually lives here and explore the history, culture, and local favorites of Japan's famous samurai capital.

We will start at Kamakura Station and walk along Wakamiya-oji Avenue and Dankazura, the historic approach to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. Along the way, I will explain why Kamakura became the center of Japan's first samurai government, the story of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and how the samurai shaped the city.

At Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura's most important shrine, you will learn about Shinto, Japanese shrine etiquette, and the shrine's connection with the samurai.

On our way back, we will explore Komachi Street, Kamakura's lively shopping street. As someone who lives in Kamakura, I will introduce some of my local recommendations for Japanese sweets, food, souvenirs, traditional crafts, cafés, and interesting places you may want to visit after the tour.

This tour combines Kamakura's samurai history with practical recommendations from a local resident. You are welcome to ask me about Japanese culture, religion, food, everyday life, or how to spend the rest of your day in Kamakura.

We will finish near Kamakura Station, making this a great introduction before you continue exploring Kamakura on your own.
