Embarking on this day trip to Fátima and Nazaré from Porto presents an opportunity to explore a prominent site of Marian devotion in Portugal alongside a renowned location for surfing.
Activity Details
Your journey commences at the Monumento ao Rei Pedro V located in Praça da Batalha, where you will board your transportation for a scenic drive southward from Porto, lasting approximately two hours.
As the urban backdrop fades, picturesque views of rolling hills, traditional whitewashed villages, and olive plantations emerge. Our first stop is Fátima, celebrated globally as a key Marian shrine.
Upon arrival, 45 minutes will be dedicated to visiting the Chapel of the Apparitions and the majestic Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, which features 15 chapels that honor the mysteries of the rosary. Additionally, you'll explore the modern Temple of the Holy Trinity, a remarkable example of contemporary church architecture in Europe. Following this, you’ll have an hour of leisure time to wander and absorb the atmosphere.
Next, we will journey for 45 minutes to reach Nazaré, famous for its colossal waves that draw daring surfers from around the globe. Here, a guided tour of the Sítio neighborhood awaits, where you can take in panoramic views of the cliffs, Nazaré Lighthouse, and the Nazaré Canyon, a geological marvel that creates the towering waves at Praia do Norte.
As part of the tour, you will visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazaré, one of Portugal's oldest religious landmarks, uncovering the narrative surrounding the revered Marian statue and the legend of Dom Fuas Roupinho’s miracle. After this guided exploration, a generous 1.5 hours will be yours to savor the local cuisine and enjoy lunch by the sea.
Once refreshed, we will embark on a 1-hour 45-minute drive towards the Church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo in Válega, Ovar. Here, a 30-minute stop allows for admiration of its stunning facade adorned with intricate polychrome azulejo tiles that depict biblical scenes such as the Annunciation, the Coronation of the Virgin, and the Last Supper, presenting a captivating mosaic of vibrant colors.
Your adventure concludes as we return to the original meeting point in Porto, approximately 11.5 hours after our departure.
