Details of the Day Trip
We will gather at the central Praça da Batalha at the scheduled time to kick off our exploration of some of the most significant historical sites in northern Portugal. After a brief overview, we will secure our seatbelts and set off from Porto.
The first stop on our journey is the Santuário Diocesano do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, often referred to as the Santuário do Monte de Santa Luzia. From its summit, we will relish a magnificent panoramic vista encompassing the city, the Atlantic in the distance, and the Lima River estuary. This Byzantine-styled structure, crowned by a grand dome and embellished with striking stained glass, promises to captivate.
Next, we will descend into the heart of Viana do Castelo, a charming town characterized by its cobblestone lanes, serene squares, and elegant houses. Here, you'll have one hour of free time to wander the historic area at your own pace, where Manueline architecture beautifully intersects with Baroque and Gothic styles.
Our journey continues to Braga, often hailed as the Portuguese Rome. Upon arrival, we'll embark on a guided exploration, allowing us to stroll through its historical sites while delving into the narratives and significance of its principal monuments. Following this, you'll have 1.5 hours of leisure time to savor lunch at one of the local eateries.
After regrouping, we'll proceed to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, an architectural jewel nestled on a hillside, surrounded by lush gardens. You'll have an hour to explore its baroque staircase, which elegantly meanders up 116 meters (380 feet) to the temple at the summit—don't forget to capture a photograph!
Lastly, our adventure leads us to Guimarães, recognized as the birthplace of the Portuguese nation. We will stroll through its historic center, which boasts a World Heritage Site designation, with every corner telling a story steeped in history amidst medieval structures, ancient walls, and quaint squares that echo another era.
Our trip will conclude as we return to our original meeting point, bidding farewell after a fulfilling 10.5-hour excursion.
