Free walking tours in George Town

George Town : Heritage Trail Guided Walking Tour

Had a really fun walk with Ang CC today! Starting from Light Street, we learned about how the Chinese community came to Penang, what they did for a living, some influential historical figures, and lots of fun little stories along the way. We also got a brief intro to Malaysia’s different cultures and religions, which made Penang feel much more interesting and layered. Now we already know what to explore next time we come back 😉 Thanks Ang!

We joined a three-hour guided tour with Ken and honestly, got much more out of it than we expected ! I had assumed “three hours” was just an approximate duration, but Ken really spent the full three hours walking us through different corners of Penang centre, and the whole tour was packed with stories, local history, geography clues , and little details we would never have noticed on our own. She also brought along different props to help us understand and experience parts of Penang’s past, treated us to some really good Indian snacks, and even taught us a few old gang hand signs and coded phrases, which was a lot of fun. What stayed with me most was the sense that the city’s history is still very much alive and being passed on , rather than simply displayed as something from the past. Ken was knowledgeable, patient and genuinely enthusiastic throughout, and we really appreciated how much effort she put into the tour. It was one of the highlights of our time in Penang, and I’d absolutely recommend it !!!

I highly recommend this tour to anyone who is a history enthusiast. Georgetown has such a rich, fascinating past, and thanks to JS’s detailed insights and local anecdotes, you get to appreciate historical nuances and architectural details you’d easily miss on your own.

Ms. Pooi Ling is an absolute gem of a local guide, and The Spice & Street Food Walk of George Town with her is an unforgettable experience! Her depth of knowledge regarding Penang’s rich multicultural history and culinary traditions is remarkable. Walking through Little India alongside her feels like unlocking a secret side of the island. The curated selection of Indian street food and traditional bites was outstanding, with every stop perfectly paced and packed with authentic flavors. What sets Ms. Pooi Ling apart is her exceptional warmth, fluency across multiple languages, and incredible cultural grounding. Sharing a Chinese heritage with her added a special layer of connection, making the conversation flow effortlessly as we explored how different cultures seamlessly blend in George Town's historic streets. If you are visiting Penang and want an authentic, insightful, and mouthwatering food tour, do not hesitate to book with Ms. Pooi Ling on GuruWalk! Easily 5 out of 5 stars—highly recommended!

Penang Food Tour : A Feast That Taste Like History : 17+ Tasting

Eve arrived before us. She designed the tour step by step as the history that she planned to tell. Finally she did the tour in mandarin as all audience were Chinese. She managed to get the kids interested in the history of gang by showing them the secret path at the end. And a lot of other details that were very much interesting to see and to hear. You can feel that Eve loves to share. The break happened in little India and we had some drinks and snacks. Perfect tour on a sunny day. Find it yourself!

Nothing I write could really do justice to how much I recommend this tour. It was one of the best walking tours I’ve ever done (and I’ve done dozens of them across several continents). Our guide (Eskay) had it all: a great sense of humour, an impressive knowledge of history, and a perfect sense of timing. We came away with a really good and in-depth understanding of George Town. This walking tour isn’t optional — it’s a must for anyone who wants to discover the real history of George Town.

CC is enthusiastic and well-prepared. Walking along King Street, I gained a comprehensive understanding of how the Chinese community took root in Penang—including clan associations, secret societies, and so on—something no travel guide could ever achieve. If I had gone alone, I might have only picked up some fragmented information; but CC connected all these pieces to tell a grand historical narrative. It didn’t just help me understand what the buildings I saw were, but also why they are the way they are. It sparked my deep interest in the modern history of the Chinese in Southeast Asia. Highly recommended.

The heritage walk is based on historical facts and Ang Choon Cheak (CC) is knowledgable, and continually reference with what was said before as we walk from one route to the next. CC engages with the participants, his pace is just right and we did not feel hurried. His use of historical photos and maps helps the participants to have a better understanding of the historical sites.
