Nato e cresciuto a Edimburgo, ho lavorato come reporter, autore di articoli e redattore cinematografico per The Scotsman per 17 anni e in seguito ho scritto regolarmente per il Guardian e il London Times. Ho scritto e curato diversi libri, tra cui The Times on Cinema e On Location - The Film Fan's Guide to Britain and Ireland.
