Gjirokaster Free Walking Tour
Description
Join our 2-hour walking tour led by certified professional guides and discover the magical stone city of Gjirokastër. While our tour is relatively new and doesn’t have as many reviews as some others, it offers a rich, authentic experience filled with historical facts for Albania and Gjirokaster, local knowledge, fun stories, and genuine passion.
During our walk, we’ll explore the most fascinating areas of the city, including the historic Bazaar and charming neighborhoods showcasing traditional Gjirokastër-style architecture.
In the bazaar area, we will also visit the Obelisk Monument, the site of the first Albanian-language school in Gjirokastër, and the Bazaar Mosque.
We’ll then continue through the traditional cobblestone streets, passing by some of the city’s most beautiful historic houses, including the 300-year-old Skenduli House, the former home of dictator Enver Hoxha (now the Ethnographic Museum), and the birthplace of Albania’s most renowned writer, Ismail Kadare.
Along the way, we’ll stop at the best panoramic viewpoints, giving you the chance to enjoy and capture breathtaking views of the city and the valley
We won't miss seeing a cold war tunnel to as important part of the past history of Communist Albania.
We also walk around the castle surroundings, where the tour ends not to far from castle entrance. But we don’t enter the castle itself, as it requires an entrance fee, and we prefer to give you the freedom to explore it at your own peace after the tour or in another moment. Additionally, the castle is big and parts of the castle can be very sunny during certain times of the day, so we find it more enjoyable to keep the city tour and castle visit separate. Castle needs around 1 hour to be explored and stays open from 9 am to 7pm. Be aware that some guides lie when they say castle is part of their tour.
After the tour, you’ll also receive recommendations on traditional food, restaurants, and things to do in Gjirokastër, as well as tips for other destinations in Albania if needed.
We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the beauty, history, and stories of the Silver City and Albania. See you soon!
