Gjirokaster Free Tour

The tour lasts 2 hours
Available in English

Description

Join our 2-hour walking tour led by certified local guides and discover the magic off the. stone city of Gjirokastër. While our tour is relatively newer and doesn’t have as many reviews as some others, it offers a rich, authentic experience filled with historical facts for Gjirokaster and also Albania in general.

During our tour, we’ll explore the most fascinating areas of the city, including the historic Bazaar and the charming neighborhoods showcasing traditional Gjirokastër-style architecture.

In the bazaar area, we will also visit the Obelisk Monument, the site of the first Albanian-language school in Gjirokastër, and the Bazaar Mosque.

We’ll then continue through the traditional cobblestone streets, passing by some of the city’s most beautiful historic houses, including the 300-year-old Skenduli House, the former home of dictator Enver Hoxha (now the Ethnographic Museum), and the birthplace of Albania’s most renowned writer, Ismail Kadare.

Along the way, we’ll stop at the best panoramic viewpoints, giving you the chance to enjoy and capture breathtaking views of the city and the valley

We won't miss seeing and talking about cold war tunnels to as important part of the past history of Communist Albania. We will visit also Çerçiz Topulli Square and stop at entrance of the Cold War tunnel that could resist to nuclear attack. This one is a museum which later you can visit your own as it has it's own hides who explains inside it.

We don’t visit the castle as it requires an entrance fee, and can be to hot for it so we prefer to give you the freedom to explore it at your own peace after the tour as the entrance is not so far or in another moment. Additionally, the castle is big and needs around 1 hour to be seen and parts of the castle can be very sunny during certain times of the day, so we find it more enjoyable to keep the city tour and castle visit separate.  Be aware that some other pro guides in guru lie when they say visit at the castle is part of their tour just to make their tour more attractive but they don't bring people there. You will see yourself if you choose the other tour.

Et the end after the tour, you’ll also receive recommendations on traditional food, restaurants, and things to do in Gjirokastër, as well as tips for other destinations in Albania if need.

We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the beauty, history, and stories of the Silver City and Albania.

Hope to see you soon!
