Lorca: A Step in Time. Monumental Historical Tour through the City of Lorca
Tour description
Welcome to Lorca, a step back in time!
In this tour, we will explore the history of Lorca and its transformation through its most emblematic buildings. We will discover how Lorca has witnessed different civilizations throughout history and how they have left their mark up to the present day.
We will start this tour at the Convent of La Merced, where I will explain the mission of this iconic monument. Additionally, we will address how life was in Lorca during the late Middle Ages and what the main problems were for the citizens of Lorca at that time.
We will continue our journey to the Plaza de España, where we will find a monumental ensemble formed by religious power, civil power, and judicial power. We will pause in time to learn how the heart of the city of Lorca was built.
Our next stop will be at the Glorieta de S. Vicente, where we will observe a 3-in-1: the milestone column, atop it Saint Vincent Ferrer, and the ancestral home of the Marín Ponce de León family.
We will get to know one of the most emblematic palaces in the region of Murcia, one of the buildings that introduced the Baroque style to the Spanish Levant, namely the palatial house of the Guevara family.
We will conclude this tour with a visit to the palatial house known as "Huerto Ruano," where we can observe how a wealthy merchant introduced the eclectic style, previously unknown in Lorca, in the second half of the 19th century.
