We visit Carvajal de Gredos, an ancient Vettonian forest above the Jerte and Ambroz valleys.
Tour description
In its uniqueness, it is made up of large specimens of Quercus pyrenaica , with Celtic winepresses and other remains of vernacular architecture, granite outcrops abound and it is surrounded by impressive views over the famous valleys of northern Cáceres. Cabezabellosa is the southernmost mountain range in Gredos.
The entire complex stands out for its great natural monumentality. We walk through the forest to natural viewpoints. This area is included in the Sierra de Gredos Special Protected Area (ZEC).
The ancient Celts worshipped the oak tree as a vital source of food for all forest dwellers. They processed acorns to obtain their main food. It is no coincidence that the altarpiece in the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Castillo in Cabezabellosa depicts the Tree of Jesse. Another possible syncretism is that of the town's patron saint, Saint Lawrence, with the god Lugh and the myth of Perseus. We not only discover ancient myths, but also magical places in the natural landscape.
