Great tour. The tour guide wears traditional clothes, bringing a very nostagic ambiance. He is also very knowledgeable and fun. You will enjoy 2 hours walking around with him.

Standing serenely amidst the glittering skyscrapers and frantic business energy of Tokyo Imperial Palace lies one of Japan’s most fascinating reminders of its imperial and samurai past. Surrounded by vast moats, ancient stone walls, pine-lined pathways and exquisite gardens, the palace feels less like the centre of a mega-city and more like a quiet portal into another century. This is the residence of Emperor Naruhito, his wife Empress Masako, and their daughter Princess Aiko. While Japan today is a modern constitutional monarchy, the Emperor remains a deeply respected cultural and symbolic figure. Long before modern Tokyo emerged, this area was known as Edo and was the power centre of the mighty Tokugawa Shoguns — military rulers who governed Japan while the Emperors largely remained ceremonial figures in Kyoto. The palace grounds once housed the colossal Edo Castle, headquarters of the samurai government. Here, powerful shoguns commanded armies of samurai warriors, maintained strict social hierarchies, and shaped the destiny of Japan for over 250 years. Somewhere in popular imagination — and certainly in tourist fantasies — ninjas too lurk in the shadows of history, though real ninja activity was usually far more secretive and less cinematic than Hollywood suggests! 😄 Japanese society during the feudal era followed a rigid hierarchy: Emperor at the spiritual apex, followed by Shoguns, Daimyo lords, Samurai warriors, artisans, farmers and merchants. Loyalty, discipline and honour were considered supreme virtues, especially among the samurai. The castle itself suffered repeated devastation from massive fires over the centuries — a common fate in old Japanese cities where wooden structures dominated. Much of the original Edo Castle was destroyed by fire, earthquakes and war. What visitors see today is a graceful blend of restored gates, foundations, gardens and modern imperial residences. One particularly fascinating exhibit for visitors is the scale model reconstruction of Edo Castle, which helps one imagine the staggering size and grandeur of the original complex. It vividly demonstrates how immense the fortress-city once was during the age of the Shoguns. The East Gardens are especially magnificent — beautifully manicured lawns, seasonal flowers, stone ramparts, tranquil ponds and carefully pruned trees that embody the Japanese aesthetic of disciplined natural beauty. During cherry blossom season, the atmosphere becomes magical. Visitors should note that parts of the palace grounds are closed on certain days, especially Mondays, Fridays and during special Imperial events. The inner palace itself is generally inaccessible except on select public occasions such as the Emperor’s Birthday and New Year greetings. Perhaps the most astonishing aspect of all is this: while standing amid moats, watchtowers and centuries-old stone walls, one is actually right in the middle of Tokyo’s ultra-modern central business district, surrounded by corporate headquarters, bullet trains, luxury hotels and neon-lit commerce. Few places in the world juxtapose ancient imperial tradition and futuristic urban energy quite as dramatically as the Imperial Palace of Tokyo. This summarises the entire walk. Go for it.
