Welcome to The Hague: International City of Peace and Justice

Few cities of its size have impacted the world quite like The Hague. Over the course of around two hours and roughly six kilometers, this free tour takes you through the center of a city that serves as the seat of Dutch democracy, the workplace of the royal family, and a bastion of modern international law. Ten main stops anchor the route, but keep your eyes open between them: the embassies, the ministry buildings, and the quiet canals all have stories to tell. What makes The Hague unique is how effortlessly centuries coexist. Medieval towers reflect in the same water as a modern skyline. A royal palace sits on a busy shopping street. The institutions that govern a nation and arbitrate the disputes of the world do so from buildings where history seeps through every stone — yet their work could not be more urgent in the present-day.

On this tour we will visit the:

📍Hofvijver, Binnenhof, and Provincial Flags

📍Mauritshuis

📍Lange Voorhout and Escher in het Paleis

📍Noordeinde Palace

📍Royal Gardens and Prinsessewal

📍Panorama Mesdag

📍The Peace Palace – The International Court of Justice

📍Malieveld and South Holand Provincial House

📍Central Station and Ministry Corridor

📍City Hall and Theatres

Throughout the walk, I will highlight the history and contemporary role of each of these locations, sharing facts that will help you better understand The Hague and the Netherlands, as well as their impact on the world.

A Postcard From The Hague: Hofvijver, Binnenhof, and Provincial FlagsWe start the tour at the Hofvijver (translated from Dutch: Court Pond), The Hague’s most iconic postcard view. In front of us the medieval towers of the Binnenhof (translated from Dutch: Inner Court), the building of the Dutch Parliament, reflect off the water. Just beyond, a surprisingly modern skyline creeps into frame.

MauritshuisThis 17th-century mansion was built for Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, Governor of Dutch Brazil. Today, it houses one of the world's finest collections of Dutch Golden Age paintings.

Lange Voorhout and Escher in the PalaceLange Voorhout is one of the most elegant tree-lined avenues in the Netherlands, flanked by 18th-century mansions that now serve as embassies, international institutions, and government offices. At number 74 sits Escher in het Paleis: the former Winter Palace of Queen Emma, now devoted to the mind-boggling graphic art of Dutch artist M.C. Escher.
