The curse of Jacques de Molay and the end of the Capetian dynasty

The aim of this tour is to unravel the mysterious end of the Capetian dynasty in France and discover how Marseille became part of this story by belonging to the House of Anjou—a collateral branch of the Capetians. We will visit the structures that stood during that century and that, surprisingly, are still standing today.

The Capetian dynasty reigned from 987 to 1328, but our story begins with Philip the Fair (Philip IV of France): the king who dared to destroy the all-powerful Order of the Knights Templar. A decision that would come at a price. From the stake, Grand Master Jacques de Molay pronounced a curse upon the king and his lineage—and what followed left many wondering if it truly came to pass.
