Malgrat de Mar: amongst fishermen, pirates and holidaymakers (Free Tour)

The tour lasts 2 hours
Available in Catalan, English, Spanish and Portuguese

Description

Discover the real story of Malgrat de Mar — far beyond its beaches and hotels.

This is a storytelling walking tour through the evolution of a Mediterranean village: from fishermen and medieval lords, to war, migration, and the rise of modern tourism. If you want to understand what Malgrat really is, this is the experience for you.

What makes this tour special?
This is not a typical sightseeing walk. It’s a local insider experience combining history, stories, and hidden details you would never notice on your own.

Places we will explore
  • The municipal jetty at La Conca beach, where fishing tradition still meets the sea
  • The historic old town, full of local life and hidden corners
  • The Church of Sant Nicolau de Bari, symbol of the town’s spiritual and social history
  • The old fish market (Peixateries Velles), once the beating heart of Malgrat’s economy
  • Parc del Castell, one of the best viewpoints over the town and coastline

Stories you will hear
  • How fishing shaped Malgrat’s identity for centuries
  • The town’s origins within the Palafolls area and the Viscounty of Cabrera
  • The impact of the Spanish Civil War on local families and daily life
  • The story of mass migration and industrial change in the 20th century
  • How iron, industry, and tourism transformed a quiet village into a coastal destination

Extra local touch
Depending on the season, I may offer a small tasting of homemade “ratafia”, a traditional Catalan herbal liqueur — a taste of local culture at the end of the experience.

Guide: Izan
Guiding since 2026
Hi! I’m Izan, a local from Malgrat de Mar. I used to work at the town’s tourism office, so I’ve spent time helping visitors understand the area — and I realized I really enjoy telling its stories. That’s why I started this tour: to share the hidden side of Malgrat, from its fishing roots to its modern transformation. I speak Catalan, Spanish, English and Portuguese fluently, and I also have a basic knowledge of other languages. I love meeting people from different countries, even if I don’t speak all languages perfectly. I hope to show you a real, local perspective of my hometown 🙂
