Free Walking Tours in Kibera

Very interesting and impressive tour with Stella and her brother. I was a bit worried about my safety at the beginning, as I was doing the tour alone as a "mzungu", but Stella quickly allayed my fears and I felt safe at all times. The people there are all friendly and seem very happy despite the difficult conditions. I was also not begged or anything like in other parts of nairobi. I can recommend the tour to anyone who wants to experience the non-touristy side of Kenya or Nairobi. Many thanks again to Stella!

The tour with Stella was amazing! She is incredibly kind, brings a wonderful vibe, and provided deep insights by answering all our questions. She explained the history of the area, the current situation, and what life is like for the local people. Having grown up in the settlement, she knows it inside out. The tour is a loop through the neighborhood, which we finished with a delicious meal at a local spot. The locals were friendly and respectful, and the children were delightful with their positive energy. At no point did we feel distressed or uncomfortable. We highly recommend taking a tour with Stella—she is a wonderful person who offers a truly authentic perspective. Thank you, Stella!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An Eye-Opening and Meaningful Experience in Kibera We had a truly memorable and eye-opening experience exploring Kibera with Brian. He spent around two hours walking with us deep into the community, taking the time to explain many different aspects of everyday life in Kibera. Throughout the walk, he gave us detailed insights into how local people live, including housing conditions, access to water and electricity, local culture, education, schools, and the challenges that residents face in their daily lives. He was very knowledgeable and patient, and was always happy to answer our questions and explain the background and context behind what we were seeing. What I appreciated most was that the tour gave us a much deeper and more human understanding of Kibera. Instead of just seeing it from the outside or relying on what we had previously heard about the area, we were able to walk through the community, observe everyday life firsthand, and learn about both the difficulties and the resilience of the people who live there. Brian was also very friendly, responsible, and attentive throughout the entire experience. We felt well looked after during the walk. At the end of the tour, he even personally escorted us all the way to our car and made sure that we got in safely before leaving, which was a very thoughtful gesture and something we really appreciated. Overall, this was much more than just a sightseeing tour. It was an educational and meaningful experience that gave us a perspective on Kibera and local life that we would never have gained from visiting the usual tourist attractions alone. I would highly recommend this guide to anyone who wants to understand Kibera beyond the stereotypes and learn more about the community, its culture, daily life, and people in a respectful and informative way. Thank you for taking such good care of us and for sharing your knowledge and community with us!

Brian was an engaging and informative guide. He showed me around Kibera and explained how the local residents got electricity, water, etc. and he also shared his experiences growing up in Kibera. He brought me to different viewing points so you can see the scale of the slum and to several interesting stops like a nightclub and a workshop where he works with an organisation to recycle plastic to build chess sets (which they then donate). I had a great time overall and would recommend booking this tour.

It was an incredible experience, thanks to Daniel, a young man who lives in Kibera and has dedicated his life to supporting the youth in his community. If you truly want to understand the history of the slum, there is no one better. He will guide you through its narrow alleys, introduce you to the local people, and give you a genuine, firsthand experience in a completely safe and relaxed atmosphere. Daniel is the founder of Okolea Mtaa Foundation (https://www.okolea-mtaa-foundation.org/), an organization that supports education and sports opportunities for young people in Kibera.

I would highly recommend the tour done by Stella and her brother. They managed to show us the real life in Kibera and told us everything about how it was built in the first place, how the infrastructure looks like, what keeps the people busy, what problems people are facing and also what initiatives are active on the ground. The tour has high educational value done by two locals. Completely save and enjoyable.

It was an unique experience and I am so glad I decided to go on this tour. Brian is a humble man but that better not mislead you, he is a pro, has been doing it for years and is literally making a degree in being a guide and his knowledge and ability to pass information is far more than I expected. I learned the history of Kibera, its struggles, highlights and demons. Is it really bad to go and visit a slum? Kibera is an enormous residential area, I think pretending it's not there is worse. It has its own look and its own art. Go with Brian, respect the community and please leave behind as much as you can, people are struggling for real!

We did this tour with Brian, and it was one of the best experiences we had in Nairobi — being able to understand and get closer to the reality of life in Kibera. It’s an area full of art and entrepreneurial people. Brian is an excellent guide; he kindly helped us discover all the details of the place where he grew up. He has very interesting projects and is an active member of the community. If I were to do this tour again, I would definitely do it with him. Thank you very much for welcoming us — see you next time!

Brian is a great guide and really knows his way around Kibera. He showed us many interesting places and was very patient, answering all our questions with great detail. We were especially inspired by his personal story as a self-taught artist, and it was encouraging to see how many talented young people in Kibera, like him, are pursuing their dreams.

Brian is incredible. Initially I was concerned about visiting the slum, not wanting to disturb the people in their day to day lives and out of fear that this would feel like displaying their harsh conditions only. But the opposite was the case: We learned so much about the development in the slum and the work and hope people have to improve things. Brian gave us so many details about the area and let us dive deep in into the everyday life there. If you want to do such a tour make sure you do it with a person who actually is from there, and Brian seems perfect for it.
