Free Tour of Mysteries, Ghosts, and Witch Burning in Edinburgh
Tour description
Discover the alleys where Edinburgh residents lived in the 17th century, but above all, how they died during the Black Plague, and how doctors tried to cure it with bird masks.
We will tell you about the mysteries of the South Bridge, where whisky was illegally distilled, but more importantly, bodies were hidden. We will talk about bodies, but from the 19th-century black market of corpses and the serial killers William Burke and William Hare. We will visit the Old Calton Cemetery.
We will go to the hill of Calton Hill*, where we will talk about something we are passionate about: the burning of witches and wizards, and we will see if any of those who take this tour would have ended up in those bonfires. On Calton Hill, we also have the observatory, Nelson's monument, and the national monument of Scotland, which are symbols of the city, but here they are called the shames of Edinburgh.
We will walk through a passage, Jacob's stairs, which were used as a secret passage during the black market of corpses.
All this mystery and mysticism surrounding Edinburgh for decades attracts hundreds of tourists to the city eager to know what happened in these centuries, are you going to miss it?
