Gdansk Shipyard Uncovered Tour by Walkative

Duration: 2h
Languages: German, English
Quality Verified Registered on July 05, 2017

Walkative was established in 2007 by a group of young enthusiasts who also happened to be licensed tour guides. Today, we operate in 20 cities in countries across all of Europe and beyond, including France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Ukraine and Israel. We have already guided more than 3 million tourists, with more than 350 000 in 2023 only! Despite this growth, we stay true to our values: be local and present the history of our cities in a professional, yet entertaining way, accessible for everybody, regardless their budget. We provide service not only in big, well established places like Berlin, Paris or Krakow, but also smaller, less known, yet no less fascinating locations, like Nice, Toruń or Lublin. We cooperate with highly trained, professional guides providing both engaging tip-based and regular fixed-price tours. And most importantly - we know our cities by heart! Join us and stay Walkative!

Tour description

The Gdansk Shipyard is a must-see for visitors to Gdansk, so we invite you to our Walkative! tour to uncover with us the Shipyard of change.

For many, the Gdansk Shipyard is the cradle of “Solidarity” and a symbol of the fall of communism in Europe. For fans of industrial buildings, it is a magical space where the industrial architecture of the late 19th century meets the early 20th century, where relics of communism intertwine with modern 21st century architecture.

The Gdańsk Shipyard is a place where:

  • imperialism changed into capitalism
  • the industrial goals of Nazism changed into the industrial goals of socialism
  • communism with the entire Iron Curtain changed into freedom
  • the brutal hand of the free market changed the industrial space into a place of entrepreneurship, culture and entertainment.

We will start our tour at Plac Solidarności (next to Pomnik Poległych Stoczniowców 1970 Monument), from where we will take a journey through the dark years of communism, arriving at the Shipyard, where a lot happened and is still happening.

Discover with us a magical part of the city, a district of entertainment, art, history, industry and symbols. Come to the Gdansk Shipyard Ucovered Tour by Walkative!

The tour around the old shipyard (still a working shipyard) was fascinating. Our wonderful guide made it a very interesting tour by sharing shared her understanding of Poland’s political and social history. She told us of the history of the shipyards and Solidarity and as a result made the tour much more interesting than I had anticipated. Thank you for a very educational, fun afternoon.

Filip you should become a tourism advisor to the city! That's how Shipyard should be presented and described and promoted. There is such a potential for tourism you could scale up! Filip is so knowledgeable, so much historical details that were of interest of the group plus he answered all (sometimes difficult) questions !

Once again, Kasia was informative, passionate and knowledgeable. Yesterday’s city tour was excellent and this tour was no different. Kasia’s lived experience together with her in depth understanding of Poland’s political and social history make for a tour that should not be missed. Thank you

Sandra was an excellent tour guide. She showed us interesting locations relating to the history of the shipyards and solidarity, relating them to current events. She also explained the art that has been created in the shipyards which was a surprise aspect to the tour! Sandra was very alert to how the group was feeling (it was snowing when we were there) and adapted the tour accordingly. Highly recommended!

It was SO interesting!! It's incredible that the area around an old shipyard can be very fascinating - but the guide made it happen🤩👍👍👍
