1
Outside visit
1. Nine Holy Cannons (Cửu Vị Thần Công)
Just outside the Imperial City, these nine massive bronze cannons were cast in 1803 during the reign of Emperor Gia Long. Though never used in battle, they were considered sacred and served as spiritual guardians of the Citadel. Each cannon symbolizes a force of nature — four represent the seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) and five represent the elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth), reflecting the emperor’s desire for cosmic harmony and balance in his rule.
2
Outside visit
Ngo Mon Gate (Five-Phoenix Pavilion)
This grand and iconic gate served as the main entrance to the Imperial City, but only the emperor was permitted to pass through its central arch. Constructed in 1833 under Emperor Minh Mang, the gate is crowned with a striking wooden pavilion, its roof shaped like five soaring phoenixes—symbols of royalty, virtue, and renewal. From this very spot, emperors once addressed the nation, observed royal parades, and marked the most sacred moments of court life. Today, it remains one of Hue’s most enduring symbols
3
Outside visit
Thai Hoa Palace (Palace of Supreme Harmony)
The heart of imperial power. Step into this grand hall, where emperors hosted court sessions and foreign diplomats. Surrounded by red columns and golden dragon carvings, it’s easy to imagine the pageantry of royal life as mandarins stood in solemn ranks beneath the painted ceilings.
