SAN TELMO: The stories beneath the cobblestones.

The tour lasts 2 hours
Available in Spanish

Description

San Telmo is one of the most historic neighborhoods in Buenos Aires: its cobblestones have witnessed much of the city, and its old mansions — abandoned after the yellow fever of 1871 — have become patios for tango and art. I invite you to explore it with me, from the possible founding site to the corner where Mafalda was born.

What we will discover:

Parque Lezama: the green lung of the neighborhood and possible cradle of the first Buenos Aires (1536)

Russian Orthodox Church: its blue domes, a piece of St. Petersburg in the heart of San Telmo

San Telmo Market and Pasaje Defensa: iron and glass from 1880, artists and traditional eateries

Plaza Dorrego and Defensa Street: where tango was born in the patios

Paseo de la Historieta: a stop to meet Mafalda

And as always, we share some mate along the way to chat about our identity (remember to request it free of charge 2 hours in advance, so I arrive fully prepared).

Why this tour?

I am Gabriel, a history teacher and journalist. I have been teaching this for over 30 years, and my idea is simple: to move away from the generic tour and propose a real conversation, entering the patios where this culture was forged. Small groups, no rush.

Important info:

Meeting point: Monument to Don Pedro de Mendoza (Av. Brasil and Defensa)

We start on time

Bring cash: many artisans at the fair do not accept cards

Gabriel: Chronicles and Secrets of Buenos Aires History Professor | Journalist | Cultural Communicator Hello! I'm Gabriel, and my mission is to help you stop being a spectator and become a protagonist in Buenos Aires' history. With decades dedicated to teaching, I understand Buenos Aires not as a simple map of streets, but as a living book full of political, social, and architectural layers waiting to be deciphered. Why discover the city with me? Academic Rigor: As a History Professor, my approach goes beyond superficial anecdotes; I invite you to understand the "why" behind our great works, from French academicism to the Art Deco that defines our skyline. Professional Narrative: My experience as a journalist and radio broadcaster allows me to narrate the city with an agile, clear, and engaging style, transforming every walk into a vibrant chronicle. Heritage Specialist: I am passionate about historic districts. My tours are the result of years of research into the elite architecture and social evolution of our capital. My Cultural Tours: Avenida de Mayo: The political and social heart of Buenos Aires, an axis of European architecture and historic cafes. Retiro: The "Creole Aristocracy"; a journey to the splendor of the Paris of America and its imposing palaces. San Telmo: Where tango was born; a tour through the historic center, its alleyways, and the bohemian soul of the city. San Nicolás: Echoes of History; a detailed circuit of the key points where our civic identity was born and the flag was raised. Theatrical Symphony (In Duo with Griselda): A sensory immersion through the world capital of theater, fusing historical rigor with a poetic perspective. "Buenos Aires is a city that is contemplated as you walk. I await you to unveil together the curtain on its silenced stories."
