Tour description

ZANZIBAR STONE TOWN: It is an ancient part of Zanzibar City, Stone Town is a historic core of the city, the former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate, Stone Town has unique architecture and culture and was declared a heritage site from UNESCO in 2000

- The Stone City is a major visitor attraction in Zanzibar due to its unique culture, history, people and architecture.


STONE CITY TOUR, on this walking tour you will have the opportunity to visit all the interesting places and historical buildings and sites such as

- House of Wonders: (Formally the Sultan's Resistance) was built in 1883 by Sultane Baraghash, the second Sultane of Zanzibar.

- Old fort: it was built in the 17th century by the Omanis, it has an approximately square shape. It is now a cultural center with shops inside and a small stadium where dance and live music performances are held.

- Palace Museum: also known as the Sultan's Palace, it was built in the 19th century. In this museum you will learn the history of Princes Salme, a former daughter of Sayyed Said Sultane of Zanzibar.

- Visit to the old slave trading market: Historic Zanzibar was a center of trade in East Africa, especially the slave trade, which was organized by Sayyed Said Sultane of Zanzibar.

- Visit Darajani market to see commercial auctions such as the fish auction.

- Visit the Forodhani night market.

- Visit Fred Mercury's house

Visiting all these interested places takes 2 and a half hours.

    Old Fort of Zanzibar

    Old fort was built by Omani Arabs after expelling the Portuguese in 1699. It was used as a garrison and prison in the 19th century, and as a terminal of the Zanzibar railways 1905-28. A new guardhouse was built in 1947 and used as the ladies' club, and an amphitheatre was added in the 1990s. It is now the headquarters of the Zanzibar international film festival. Inside of this historical site the walker will see it and getting history about this old fort also taking picture and see local shops around here

    House of Wonders

    The palace was built in 1883 for Barghash bin Said, second Sultan of Zanzibar. It was intended as a ceremonial palace and official reception hall, it was named "House of Wonders" because it was the first building in Zanzibar to have electricity, and also the first building in East Africa to have an elevator. The design of the palace is attributed to a British marine engineer. In House of wonder the traveller can see Zanzibar traditional dhow used for trading activities , traditional clothes of Zanzibarian

    People's Palace Museum

    this was the palace of Sultan Seyyid Said from 1828 until it was largely destroyed by the British bombardment of 1896. It was then rebuilt and used until the 1964 revolution when the last sultan was overthrown.
