Angkor Sunrise Adventure – Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm & Preah Khan
04:45 AM – Hotel Pick-up
Your guide and driver will meet you at your hotel lobby in Siem Reap and transfer to the Angkor Archaeological Park. Leaving early allows us to arrive before sunrise and secure a good viewing spot at Angkor Wat.
Sunrise at Angkor Wat
05:20 AM – Sunrise Experience
Arrive at Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world and Cambodia’s most famous temple. We walk to the front reflection ponds where visitors gather to watch the magical sunrise behind the five lotus-shaped towers.
As the sky changes from dark blue to orange and pink, the silhouette of the temple reflects beautifully in the water, creating one of the most iconic views in Southeast Asia.
After sunrise, explore the temple in detail. Built in the early 12th century by King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat was originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu and later became a Buddhist temple.
During the visit, you will see:
- The incredible bas-relief carvings stretching almost 800 meters, depicting stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
- The famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk carving.
- The temple’s architecture symbolizing Mount Meru, the sacred mountain at the center of the universe in Hindu cosmology.
- The central towers representing the peak of Mount Meru.
Your guide will explain the history of the Khmer Empire and the meaning behind the temple’s carvings and architecture.
Angkor Thom City & Bayon Temple
08:30 AM – Visit Angkor Thom
Next, we visit Angkor Thom, the last great capital of the Khmer Empire built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII.
We enter through the South Gate, a massive stone gateway decorated with four giant smiling faces. On each side of the bridge, stone statues depict gods and demons pulling a naga serpent, illustrating the famous Hindu myth, the Churning of the Ocean of Milk.
Inside the city, we visit Bayon Temple, known for its 216 giant smiling stone faces carved on tall towers. Many historians believe these faces represent the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, symbolizing compassion.
During the visit, you will also see bas-reliefs depicting daily life in the Khmer Empire, including:
- Local markets and trade
- Soldiers and battles
- Fishermen and farmers
- Festivals and traditional games
These carvings provide a rare glimpse into everyday life more than 800 years ago.
Ta Prohm – The Jungle Temple
09:30 AM – Visit Ta Prohm
We then explore Ta Prohm, one of the most atmospheric temples in Angkor. Built in the late 12th century by King Jayavarman VII as a Buddhist monastery and university, Ta Prohm once housed thousands of monks and scholars.
Unlike many temples, Ta Prohm has been left partially covered by jungle. Massive silk-cotton trees and strangler fig roots grow over the ruins, creating a dramatic scene where nature blends with architecture.
Highlights include:
- Giant tree roots wrapping around stone walls
- Hidden corridors and peaceful courtyards
- Beautiful carvings slowly reclaimed by nature
Ta Prohm gained international fame after featuring in the movie Tomb Raider.
Preah Khan Temple
10:30 AM – Visit Preah Khan
Our final stop is Preah Khan, one of the largest temples built by King Jayavarman VII in 1191. The name Preah Khan means “Sacred Sword.”
This temple served as a Buddhist monastery, university, and administrative center. At its peak, it supported over 12,000 residents, including monks, teachers, dancers, and workers.
Highlights include:
- Long atmospheric corridors
- Large courtyards surrounded by jungle
- A unique combination of Buddhist and Hindu architecture
Preah Khan is quieter than other temples, providing a peaceful, mysterious atmosphere perfect for exploration and photography.
