Tour description
The route begins at Paseo Francisco Bohórquez, designed by Aníbal González, and continues past the 18th-century Bodega Antonio Fuentes. We then arrive at Plaza de Andalucía, a former market square with restored neoclassical arches. The Plaza del Ayuntamiento (Town Hall Square) houses the legendary Café Central. A few meters away, we arrive at the Casa de Dolores Crujera, a jewel of Andalusian-Mudejar architecture dating from 1905.
Visit the José María Moreno Galván Museum of Contemporary Art, located in the former 16th-century granary. The route continues through the Arquillo de la Cárcel (Prison Arch), with its Moorish latticework and a sundial, marking the entrance to the Plaza Vieja (Old Square), the oldest square in the municipality.
In the Plaza Vieja (Old Square) is the Parish Church of Our Lady of Virtues, dating back to the 16th century and possibly a former mosque. Nearby is the Moorish Arch, which connects the Parish Church and Plaza Vieja with the Cilla del Duque de Osuna (City of the Duke of Osuna), which was visited by Miguel de Cervantes.
The Paseo del Cura, behind the Parish Church, is a picturesque spot with native vegetation, where the first cemetery from the 16th century was located. The route continues past the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Convent (1555) and the San José Hermitage (17th century, rebuilt in the 19th century).
It ends in Plaza Nueva, next to the birthplace of singer Niña de La Puebla, where a monument pays tribute to her. It explains the origin of the term "moriscos," a symbol of local identity.
A fascinating route full of history, heritage and culture!
