Guided tour of the history of Jerez: a walk through the historic center from the Alcázar to the Cathedral
Tour description
The Alcázar of Jerez is a site of great historical interest. And I don't say this just because I worked there as a guide; it's reflected in the fact that it's the city's most distinctive and most visited monument. Dating back to the Almohad period (12th-13th centuries), inside we can admire the only mosque still standing in the city, Arab baths, windmills, towers, and even a 17th-19th-century palace.
A walk around the Alcázar will allow us to discover some of the most notable features of Jerez's historic center: the Church of San Miguel, the Plaza del Arena, Calle Larga, the Jewish quarter... Each of these places hides a little piece of the history of the city, Andalusia, and Spain, without having to go far.
Finally, we'll arrive at Jerez Cathedral. A magnificent building with outstanding artistic elements both inside and out.
The tour will begin at the gates of the Alcázar. Once inside, we'll head toward San Miguel. From there, we'll walk down Calle Larga to Alameda Cristina, then pass through the Jewish Quarter, Plaza Plateros, and Plaza de la Asunción before arriving at the Cathedral, where we'll finish.
Jerez and its history through a pleasant walk.
* IMPORTANT: A ticket is required to enter the Alcázar. This costs €5 or €1.80 for those born and living in Jerez, retirees, students of any age and country, and people with disabilities. The Alcázar is only open in the mornings starting October 1st.
