Guided tour of the history of Jerez: a walk through the historic center from the Alcázar to the Cathedral
Tour description
The Alcázar of Jerez is a site of great historical interest. And I don't say this just because I worked there as a guide; it's reflected in the fact that it's the city's most iconic and visited monument. Dating from the Almohad period (12th-13th centuries), inside we can admire the only mosque still standing in the city, Arab baths, mills, towers, and even a palace from the 17th-19th centuries.
A stroll around the Alcázar will lead us to discover some of the most outstanding elements of Jerez's historic center: the Church of San Miguel, the Plaza del Arena, Calle Larga, the Jewish Quarter... Each of these places hides a piece of the history of the city, of Andalusia and of Spain without having to go far.
Finally, we'll arrive at Jerez Cathedral. A magnificent building with outstanding artistic elements both inside and out.
The tour will begin at the Alcázar gate. After visiting the interior (mornings only), we will head towards San Miguel. From there, we will walk down Calle Larga, passing the Gallo Azul, and cross some of the most emblematic squares, such as Plaza Plateros and Plaza de la Asunción, before arriving at the Cathedral, where the tour concludes.
Jerez and its history through a pleasant walk.
* IMPORTANT: A ticket is required to enter the Alcázar. It costs €5, or €1.80 for those born and residing in Jerez, retirees, students of any age and country, and people with disabilities. The Alcázar is only open in the mornings from October 1st.
