Tour description
We will take a walk back in time to relive the glamous and gritty past of the area that faces the southern coast of the Old City of Montevideo.
The walkway called "La Rambla" is a monumental work of construction and the city's most visited location. But to build it, a lively area full of dancing and drinking establishments had to be dismantled. To maintain the tranquil bourgeouis image of the rest of the city, all bacchanalian activities were relegated to the theaters, cabarets, brothels, boxing rings and "academies" of the area I will show you.
So that is why this tour exists: walk the streets where famous singers such as Carlos Gardel (among others) cut their chops and writers stuck their noses up at the provincial nature of the country to put our national psyche on an urbane path.
The building of the Rambla required the moving of an incalculable amount of granite. With each blow of the unrelenting fatal pickaxe of progress, budding songwriters became cognizant of the end of an era: their neighborhood would be gone forever. Join me before it is too late!
