Tour of the essence of Antwerp | with panoramic view of the city
Description
Antwerp, Told by a Local
This walking tour offers an opportunity to understand Antwerp through its history and the processes that have shaped the city. We begin at Antwerp Central Station, where we’ll explore the development of this district and its connection to Chinatown, the Zoo, and the Diamond District, gaining insight into how these areas reflect Antwerp’s commercial and international character.
From there, we’ll continue along the Meir, tracing the city’s history and urban development until we reach the Grote Markt. Here, we’ll learn about the Cathedral, the Brabo Fountain, and the role this square has played throughout the centuries.
From the Grote Markt, we’ll walk to Het Steen, Antwerp’s oldest castle, where we’ll explore the city’s historical relationship with the River Scheldt and the importance of river trade in its development.
The tour ends at the MAS Museum, where the panoramic view of the city and the port brings together the themes explored throughout the walk. Along the way, we’ll discover the mythology surrounding Antwerp’s origins, its most significant landmarks, and the historical events that shaped its evolution, providing a deeper understanding of where the city’s prosperity comes from and how that legacy continues to shape Antwerp today—all from the perspective of a local.
