Hi! I'm James. I've been a walking tour enthusiast for years, and make it a priority any time I visit a new city. I love my town and I'm thrilled to share it's story with others. Aside from this side-hustle as a tour guide, I am a real ale enthusiast, I'm learning Mandolin and I work in international development. I recently returned from Somalia where I worked as a UN peace-keeper. Before that I lived in Kenya and Rwanda for 3 years.

Tour description

Lewes is often described as a charming Sussex market town. This walking tour reveals something far more defiant beneath the surface. From Norman castles and baronial revolts to Protestant martyrs, radical thinkers, beer boycotts and even parking-meter protests, Lewes has repeatedly challenged authority for over a thousand years. Starting from the River Ouse, climb to the castle, trace the Battle of Lewes, uncover the story of the Lewes Martyrs, and explore the town that shaped Tom Paine - one of the most influential writers of the modern world.

Join a local "Lewesian" for this free walking tour and explore how rebellion became a habit in Lewes, and why it still matters today.
