We will start our story in the dark days of 1945, exploring how a landscape of scorched earth and ruins transformed into Tokyo's most resilient Black Market, and eventually evolved into the vibrant, neon-lit paradise of pop culture it is today.

During our walk, we will uncover:

Locate the EAST EXIT: Ikebukuro Station is the second busiest station in the world and is a notorious maze. Follow the signs for the "East Exit" (東口) and make sure to come up to the "Ground Level" (1F). Please note: many meeting points in Ikebukuro are underground, but our tour starts outdoors at street level. Do not wait underground! Find the Landmark: Once you are outside, look for the "Mother and Child Statue" (Boshi-zo) in the open-air plaza located between the station building and the Seibu Department Store. This stone statue of a mother and child is very prominent and is the most classic local meeting spot in Ikebukuro. Identify Your Guide: I will be standing directly in front of the statue.
