The Original San José Walking Tour: History & Culture

Join this walking tour through downtown San José and explore the real history and culture of Costa Rica’s capital.

"This tour has no set price. Take the tour freely and, at the end, you can contribute what you feel the experience was worth to you."

This walk focuses on the historic center, where the country’s most important political, cultural, and social stories unfolded.

During the tour we will visit some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the elegant Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica, The Central Park, our Metropolitan Cathedral, The Parque Nacional, our vibrant Mercado Central, and the historic Bellavista Fort now our National Museum, among other gems of our capital.

Along the way you’ll hear fascinating stories about Costa Rica’s democracy, the characters who shaped the nation, and how San José transformed from a small 19th-century town into a modern capital city. We’ll also talk about daily life, traditions, and local culture, education and healthcare system, so you can better understand Costa Rica beyond the typical tourist experience.
