Journey to East Berlin - the Wall, the GDR, and the Cold War
This tour follows the route that led from West Berlin to East Berlin, starting from Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous border crossing of the Cold War and one of the most emblematic places of the divided city.
From here, a journey into East Germany's Berlin will begin, taking us beyond the most well-known images of the Cold War. Starting from the place where the city's division was staged in front of the world, we will enter the daily life of the GDR, amidst state control, propaganda, and personal stories.
We will talk about daily life in East Germany, the control exercised by the state, the Stasi, and the difficulties that marked people's lives.
Crossing the city center, we will follow the traces of socialist Berlin, among propaganda, architecture, and urban transformations.
The route concludes at the Palace of Tears (Tränenpalast), one of the most intense places of divided Berlin, where family and friends said goodbye before separating across the border. Here, it is possible to visit the museum for free, which allows you to see up close documents, objects, and testimonies related to the themes discussed during the tour. The visit is optional and takes about half an hour.
A journey to understand what it meant to live in a divided city and under the dictatorship of the GDR.

Days Together UG offers walking tours designed to help you truly understand Berlin.
The city is made of layers of history: empire, revolutions, dictatorship, division and rebirth. On our tours we tell these stories in a clear and engaging way, walking through the places where history actually happened.
Our tours are designed as a journey: some provide a general overview of the city, while others explore specific themes such as East Berlin, the Wall, street art or the capital’s most iconic neighborhoods. The tours complement each other and allow you to discover Berlin step by step.
Our team shares not only the history of the city, but also practical tips to experience it at its best: neighborhoods, museums, restaurants and places that are less known to tourists.
Because Berlin is not a city to rush through.
It is a city to understand, one day at a time.
